Chilliwack houses first mobile soil washing facility in North America
CHILLIWACK — A partnership between a local First Nation and environmental consultants has led to a new multi-million-dollar project that would advance sustainable land stewardship born right at home.
Shxwha:y Village and Headlands Environmental have teamed up to open a mobile soil-washing facility operated and staffed by local workers – the first of its kind in North America.
“This project represents innovation rooted in partnership and stewardship,” said Robert Gladstone, Chief of Shxwha:y Village. “Together, we are creating long-term environmental and economic benefits for our community and future generations.”
The facility uses modern technology to separate reusable sand, stone and raw materials from contaminated or excess soils. The treated soil can then be reused on-site or processed for future projects, supporting a circular construction economy.
