CHILLIWACK — Domestic violence is more prevalent in Chilliwack than residents might imagine.

In what can easily be considered a disturbingly high number, the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment in Chilliwack reported on Twitter Friday (Oct. 21) that there have been 925 reported files of domestic violence in UFVRD this year.

“[Domestic violence] is a crime not often reported to police,” Corporal Carmen Kiener said. “If you or someone you know is experiencing intimate partner violence, there is help.”

In recognition of Purple Light Nights during the month of October, the RCMP aims to bring awareness to the public about domestic violence, the signs that yourself or someone you love might be in danger, and how to help.

The RCMP detachment on Airport Road in Chilliwack has purple lights illuminated on the exterior of its building during the month of October.

Regardless of social, educational, or financial status, domestic violence can affect anyone, Corporal Kiener said.

Some of the signs to watch out for are:

  • Individual is isolated from their friends and family
  • Person’s money is being controlled by their partner
  • Extreme jealousy by partner
  • Verbal Abuse and threats of violence
  • Physical abuse
  • Harassment of the person
  • Accusations of the partner flirting or having an affair with others
  • Vandalism of individual’s property

The RCMP encourage people to learn how to recognize warning signs and how to seek help if they or someone they know are experiencing intimate partner violence.

RCMP remind everyone who witnesses anything they believe to be domestic violence to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611.
