CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack RCMP is requesting the public’s assistance in identifying an individual who is believed to be responsible for spray painting graffiti in the downtown Chilliwack core.

On September 29, at around midnight, a suspect was caught on camera spray painting an image in red paint on the wall of a downtown business. An unknown female who appears to be capturing the event on a cell phone accompanied the individual.

“Graffiti is an issue that is not only costly to taxpayers, but one that generates widespread community concern,” said Sgt. Krista Vrolyk, media spokesperson for the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment in Chilliwack. “It not only affects the aesthetics of our community, but also has negative impacts on people’s perception of safety.”

In early October, the Downtown Chilliwack Business Improvement Association disseminated an email among downtown merchants that highlighted an uptick in glass breakage and graffiti in the downtown area, as a means of keeping merchants in the loop.

In the email, the BIA said a new graffiti artist has also visited the DCBIA area in an adverse fashion and left the acronym “CMC” on a wall and a garbage bin. Executive Director Trevor McDonald had been asking for merchants’ help in tracking down the vandal.

“We have a new ‘artist’ in the downtown,” McDonald wrote. “Please check your store cameras for any possible footage if graffiti occurs in your area. We can’t start an RCMP file without your input. Any video info? Please send to me at the DCBIA office.”

If you have any information on the identity of the persons shown, or this crime, please contact Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
