City agrees to purchase an estimated 5,500 tonnes of winter road salt ahead of snow season
CHILLIWACK — Whether winter season comes in with a vengeance or a whimper, Chilliwack will be well-equipped for whatever Old Man Winter has up its sleeves.
Chilliwack City Council agreed Tuesday (Oct. 18) to purchase up to 5,500 tonnes of winter road salt from low bidder LaFarge Asphalt Technologies at a price of $139.64 per tonne.
The city had received two RFQs for the supply and delivery of winter road salt for the upcoming winter season. LaFarge submitted a much lower bid than Mainroad Maintenance Products LP, whose bid of $150 disqualified them from consideration. The city is required to accept the lowest, compliant bid.
At $139.64 per ton, and with an order for up to 5,500 tonnes, winter salt will run the city about $768,000.
