Three new commissioners to join Cultus Lake Park Board; Chilliwack election results recap

CHILLIWACK — The Cultus Lake Park Board will have several new faces after three challengers were elected this past Saturday in municipal elections.

Eligible voters in Cultus Lake elected John Beesley as the top vote getter with 217 votes, followed by Erika Jartved in second place with 199 votes, and Tom Moul in third with 171 votes. The top three were elected.

Jartved and Moul did not return an email for comment. John Beesley’s contact information was not available on Civic Info B.C.

Christy Ovens was a close fourth with 153 votes, while incumbents Larry Payeur (106 votes) and Casey Smit (85 votes) were defeated.

Representing Chilliwack on the park board are Dr. Darcy Bauer and Kirk Dzaman, who were unopposed and were acclaimed back on September 16.

In other Chilliwack-area election results, Mayor Ken Popove was the runaway winner in Saturday’s mayoral contest, capturing 74.7 per cent of the vote. Ian Carmichael, in his third run for municipal office in Chilliwack, received 4,056 votes, or 25.3 per cent.

In the race for Chilliwack City Council, Jason Lum, Chris Kloot, Nicole Huitema Read, Jeff Shields, Harv Westeringh, and Bud Mercer were elected.

In the highly-watched Chilliwack school board race, Dr. Carin Bondar topped all 15 trustee candidates, followed by Willow Reichelt, Margaret Reid, David Swankey, Teri Westerby, Heather Maahs, and Richard Procee. Westerby became the first transgender man in all of Canada to win a school board seat; he did not return an email seeking comment.

The Fraser Valley Regional District has released the preliminary election results for Directors as well as school district trustees.

In Electoral Area A, Diane Johnson won by acclamation.

Peter Adamo won the vote in Electoral Area B, besting Dennis Adamson 138 to 105, which covers Spuzzum, Yale, and Sunshine Valley.

Mel Waardenburg won the vote in Electoral Area C with 238 votes, beating Wendy Bales and Mike Armstrong.

Bill Dickey was acclaimed in Electoral Area D, which includes Popkum and Bridal Falls; Patti MacAhonic was acclaimed in Electoral Area E, Chilliwack River Valley; and Hugh Davidson was acclaimed in Electoral Area F.

Cory Cassel won the vote in Electoral Area G, defeating Doug McNeill by less than 20 ballots. The final count was 168 to 149.

And in Electoral Area H encompassing Soowahlie First Nation, Cultus Lake, and Columbia Valley, Taryn Dixon won by acclamation.
