Progressives expand majority on Chilliwack school board; longtime trustee Barry Neufeld defeated

CHILLIWACK — The progressive majority on the Chilliwack school board led by Dr. Carin Bondar and her counterparts will expand to a 5-2 majority following Saturday night’s election results.

With all 31 polls reporting, UFV professor and science educator Dr. Carin Bondar led all 15 school board candidates with 8,888 votes. Incumbent Willow Reichelt was second with 8,287 votes, followed by political newcomer Margaret Reid with 8,116 votes, incumbent David Swankey in fourth with 8,047 votes, and Teri Westerby with 7,584 votes.

Heather Maahs, a school board trustee for 14 years, captured sixth place with 7,075 votes, and Richard Procee of Hofstede’s Country Barn was seventh with 7,047 votes. The top seven candidates were elected.

Educator Brian VanGarderen was only 47 votes behind in eighth.
