CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack voters have welcomed back all five incumbents who ran for re-election and a fresh new face as their six city council members.

With all polls reporting Saturday night at 10:12 p.m., Councillor Jason Lum led all 12 council candidates with 10,766 votes. Lum, the top vote getter in 2018, is a small business owner who was first elected to council in 2011. He currently serves as chair of the Fraser Valley Regional District Board of Directors and serves on a host of committees.

“It feels fantastic,” Lum said Saturday night by phone after the final results came in. “We had a lot of fun tonight. That’s what’s important to me.”

Lum attributed his successful campaign to what happened outside of the campaign period.

“A lot of it is what you do in the four years after you’re elected, and not so much in the campaigns,” Lum said. “Campaigns still matter. It’s important to give it your all and put your best foot forward. I’m proud of the work we’ve been able to accomplish on council. I’ve had the privilege of working with an amazing mayor and council.”

Kloot, a two-term councillor, small dairy farmer, and realtor, wasn’t far behind with 9,482 votes. He came in second in 2018 behind Lum.

Political newcomer and longtime Chilliwack resident Nicole Huitema Read finished in third place with 9,153 votes. She is the general manager of Community Futures South Fraser who previously started her own business in her mid 20s.

Incumbent Jeff Shields, a lifelong Chilliwack resident and chartered accountant of 30 years, won a second term by receiving 8,622 votes and fourth-place finish.

Harv Westeringh, a longtime Chilliwack resident who works as a realtor and owns a small building company with his wife, wound up with 8,048 votes in fifth place.

Incumbent Bud Mercer, who has an extensive policing background by virtue of a 34-year RCMP career, was in sixth place with 7,970 votes.

Amber Price finished in seventh place with 7,488 votes.
