Abbotsford sends nearly all incumbents back to City Council

Oct 15, 2022 | 10:12 PM

ABBOTSFORD — Voters in Abbotsford have bucked a provincial trend by returning almost every incumbent back to council chambers in the 2022 municipal election.

Ross Siemens won the mayor’s seat easily with more than 64 per cent of the vote. Siemens was a two-term councillor before running to replace the retiring Henry Braun in the mayor’s seat.

Of the six incumbent councillors, five have been re-elected. Dave Sidhu, who won a councillor seat in last fall’s by-election, led all councillors with more than 14 thousand votes. Patricia Ross, Les Barkman, Kelly Chahal, and Dave Loewen are also going back to City Hall.

Patricia Driessen, Mark Warkentin and Simon Gibson will be the three new faces in Council Chambers.

Voters also elected 7 School District #34 school trustees. Incumbents Korky Neufeld, Stand Petersen, and Shirley Wilson were returned to the Board of Education. Newcomer Preet Rai led all candidates in the vote while Mike Rauch and Jared White with the Abbotsford Partners in Education found their way onto the board. Rupi Kanda-Rajwan was also elected.

Incumbents Freddy Latham and Phil Anderson were defeated.
