LANGLEY — One of the largest pow wows in Metro Vancouver is coming back to Langley Events Centre in September.

Visitors are invited to spend a weekend of traditional songs, dances, food and more at the fourth annual stɑl’əw̓ pow wow, organized in part by the Township of Langley.

This year is especially significant as the number four is connected to St’áłəw̓ beliefs in the four directions, the four colours of the medicine wheel (black, white, red, yellow), and the four stages of life: baby, youth, adult, and elder.

“The number 4 is culturally significant and connected to physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being,” shared stɑl’əw̓ Arts & Cultural Society Manager q̓ʷɑt̓ic̓ɑ, Phyllis Atkins.

“[The elements mentioned] are celebrated at the stɑl’əw̓ Pow Wow, which takes place each year during the transition from the summer to fall seasons on the shared lands of the four host First Nation communities: qʼʷa:n̓ƛʼən̓, q̓ic̓əy̓, Máthxwi, and Se’mya’me’.”

Events include the Orange Shirt and Red Dress Specials, sponsored special competitions ranging from the Hat and Boot Dance to an All Women’s Drum Competition, and a solo performance by Juno award-winning artist Fawn Wood.

The pow wow is set to be held from September 12 to 14. Tickets are available online or at the door.
