Update: Downed power line leads to fire in Agassiz area Tuesday, amid outage

Update #2, 3:30 p.m.: An Alertable advisory now says fire crews are responding to a fire along Scott Road parallel to Highway 7 in the Agassiz area Tuesday afternoon.

The advisory says a downed power line ignited the fire, and crews are currently working to contain it while awaiting BC Hydro to disconnect power. Trees in the area are wicking, and embers are drifting toward Seabird Island.

BC Hydro crews are now on site in the area.

Update, 3:15 p.m.: BC Hydro spokesperson Kevin Aquino says BC Hydro has received reports of a downed line.

“Crews are en route and will assess and secure the site upon arrival. There are currently 916 customers without power and we will provide updates as more information is available,” Aquino told Fraser Valley Today in an email.

AGASSIZ – On a day when temperatures are expected to approach the low 30s, hundreds have lost power in the Agassiz area Tuesday afternoon.

According to BC Hydro’s online dashboard, 916 customers in Agassiz and Seabird Island lost power at 2:18 p.m.

The cause is under investigation. Fortunately, crews have been assigned, but there’s no expected time yet when power might be restored.

Hydro’s dashboard says the location is east of Hot Springs Road and west of Highway 1.
