15-year-old rollerblading with family dies after being hit by car on Vancouver Island

SHAWNIGAN LAKE — Police on Vancouver Island say a 15-year-old who was rollerblading with family members has been struck by a car and killed in a crash where speed played a role.

RCMP say it happened along Hillbank Road, north of Shawnigan Lake, at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday.

They say the victim was rollerblading when the driver of a Honda Civic lost control of the vehicle and struck the teen before hitting a telephone pole.

Police say the driver and a passenger in the Honda, both 17 years old, were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Corporal Alex Bérubé says that while investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, they’ve determined that speed was “an important factor.”
