Langley RCMP warn of uptick in catalytic converter thefts

LANGLEY — Mounties in Langley are warning the public about an uptick in catalytic converter thefts across the township and city in recent weeks.

According to a statement from RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Zynal Sharoom, police say the catalytic converters are being targeted by thieves because of the precious metals they contain. Replacing a catalytic converter can be exceptionally costly for vehicle owners, which is why Langley RCMP have issued the warning about the uptick in thefts.

“Thieves often target vehicles parked in driveways, unsecured lots, and on quiet streets, usually during the night or early morning hours,” said Sgt. Sharoom. “Larger vehicles such as SUVs, pickup trucks, and vans are especially vulnerable due to their higher ground clearance.”

Police have released the following tips on some ways to potentially deter catalytic vehicle thefts:

  • Park in secure, well-lit areas whenever possible.
  • Consider a catalytic converter anti-theft device such as a protective shield or cage.
  • Engrave or mark your catalytic converter with your vehicle identification number (VIN) – this can help police track stolen parts.
  • Set your car alarm to detect vibration or movement.
  • Be alert for suspicious sounds, such as grinding or sawing, especially during late-night hours.

Keep yourself safe:

  • Do not confront thieves if you witness a crime in progress. Instead, call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • If you notice suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, report it right away.

How to report:

  • In progress or emergencies: Call 9-1-1.
  • Non-emergency matters: Call the Langley RCMP non-emergency line at 604-532-3200 or report it online at http://report.rcmp.ca

Langley RCMP say they are actively investigating these thefts and increasing patrols in targeted areas.

“Your vigilance and timely reporting can make a significant difference in preventing crime and keeping our community safe,” Langley RCMP said.
