UPDATE, 11:15 A.M., WEDNESDAY: Chilliwack Assistant Fire Chief Chris Wilson says roughly 25 firefighters from three halls responded to Tuesday night’s fire at an apartment on First Avenue. Responding firefighters discovered a fire in the second floor of a two-storey apartment building.

Due to heavy smoke conditions present, firefighters assisted three people off balconies through a rapid deployment of ground ladders. In addition to conducting balcony rescues, firefighters quickly established a water supply by advancing hose lines into the apartment and promptly suppressed the fire. In doing so, they limited the fire damage to just one unit.

However, as a result of the fire, Wilson has confirmed that four other units sustained water and smoke damage.

The Chilliwack Emergency Support Services team, along with personnel from the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team, or CDART, were dispatched to the scene to assist displaced occupants and their pets with supports for immediate unmet needs.

There were no firefighter injuries, but two occupants were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The fire is under investigation and appears to have originated in a clothes dryer, Wilson said.

“The Chilliwack Fire Department would like to remind the public to keep combustibles clear of clothes dryers and to clean lint traps at regular intervals,” Wilson said.
