Chilliwack fire crews knock down working structure fire at boarded up office building Monday night

CHILLIWACK – Multiple Chilliwack fire engines rushed to the downtown core Monday night for a fire inside the former Chilliwack Community Services building on Mary Street.

Fire crews got the initial page at approximately 11 p.m. Monday night.

Once on scene, responding fire crews notified emergency dispatch that they were attacking a working structure fire at the boarded up building at 9214 Mary Street.

The fire was quickly knocked down, scanner traffic indicated.

An on-scene witness who lives one block from the location of the fire, William Snow, told Fraser Valley Today that all fire engines were on scene within an estimated 10 minutes of the initial call.

A picture from William Snow showed plywood had been mounted on the exterior of the building prior to Monday night’s fire.

A strong smell of fire and/or smoke was present in the 45700 block of Patten Avenue around the corner.

Water was visible on the ground of a parking lot adjacent to where the fire occurred, as fire crews deployed hoses to attack the fire.

Multiple RCMP officers attended the scene.

The fire did not spread to any adjacent buildings, but it happened less than 100 metres from a recent apartment fire at 45744 Spadina Avenue that displaced all residents of Applewood Court.
