ABBOTSFORD — A former innovation adviser to the City of Abbotsford wants to see the growing municipality of over 150,000 people transformed into a more business-friendly, livable and safer city.

Alex Mitchell, a community builder, volunteer, experienced local government changemaker, and community volunteer, has positioned economic development at the forefront of her campaign for Abbotsford City Council.

“Abbotsford is a place of opportunity and it has shaped who I am today,” said Mitchell. “But as our community grows we need a new voice at the Council table that can drive forward the investments in infrastructure, amenities, and services that will serve our community for the years ahead. It’s time for a leader with fresh perspectives, paired with tangible experience in local government to represent the next generation at the council table.”

With a focus on leading Abbotsford into the future, Mitchell says she’s dedicated to the City and its long-term success. She has nearly a decade of experience advancing the needs of the community both inside and outside City hall. Having seen and heard what Abbotsford needs, she intends to see that Abbotsford’s diverse voices are heard in local decision-making today, tomorrow, next year, and beyond, backed by over 10 years of experience working on local issues.

“I know how to deliver on that change by bringing a common sense approach to governance,” said Mitchell. “Our community has been put through the ringer from the impacts of COVID-19 to the devastating effects of the floods last fall. Abbotsford is resilient and just like our community, I’m not sitting on the sidelines at a critical time for our city – I’m here and ready to serve.”

Her career included nearly a decade of public affairs and economic development experience where she has worked to retain and attract new businesses and investment, primarily inside City Hall in Abbotsford.

Mitchell completed her MBA at Simon Fraser University and BA at the University of British Columbia. She was a fellow in SFU Beedie School’s Social Innovation Lab (RADIUS) and a 2010 Weston Loran Scholar.

She serves in numerous community initiatives, including on the board of the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre, and operates a small business elevating the local wine industry as a certified sommelier.
