CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack reported on social media Wednesday afternoon that upwards of eight Chilliwack Fire Department units that responded to a blaze up in Promontory have now controlled the fire.

According to its Twitter page posted just before noon and at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday, eight trucks from all fire halls, including halls from downtown, South Sumas, Greendale, Yarrow, and Ryder Lake, responded to a wildland fire near Teskey Road.

The City said the fire had been contained and crews were busy putting out hot spots.

Chilliwack Fire was initially dispatched just after 10:45 a.m. on the report of a structure fire in the 4700 block of Teskey Road. Firefighters from Halls 1 (Cheam Avenue hall) and 4 (South Sumas Road) reported a fire on an exterior patio of a residence that was rapidly spreading to the home as well as the vegetation and trees in Weeden Park.

Later Wednesday, the Chilliwack Fire Department issued a press release in which it said 40 firefighters altogether responded. According to Andy Brown, assistant fire chief of training and operations for the Chilliwack Fire Department, there was minor fire damage to the patio where the fire originated, as well as minor damage to the trails, and significant damage to the trees in the park.

Chilliwack Fire asks that citizens be vigilant around vegetation, parks and trails, particularly during recent dry conditions.

At least four RCMP units were on scene controlling access to Teskey Road; the hillside blaze was close to the Weeden Park Trail.
