B.C. minimum wage to increase Sunday but Fraser Valley Ag workers will have to wait

CHILLIWACK — Thousands of British Columbians will be getting a raise Sunday morning. B.C.’s minimum wage will increase by 45 cents to $17.85 an hour. The new rate represents a 2.6 per cent hike tied to B.C.’s average inflation rate from the previous year.

However, agricultural workers will have to wait until December 31 to see their minimum piece rates for hand-harvested crops increase by 2.6 per cent. The provincial government says the later date helps producers with certainty and allows for stability by avoiding the adjustment of wages during harvest season.

This marks the fourth consecutive year the province has increased the minimum wage in line with inflation.

The annual increases are now automatic, following amendments to the Employment Standards Act passed in February 2024.
