MAPLE RIDGE — Filming is now set to go ahead on a hit post-apocalyptic show in Maple Ridge – without the removal of some historically significant fruit trees on Jackson Farm.

On Thursday, August 20, the advocacy group Friends of Jackson Farm alerted the community about plans by a production company to remove the approximately eight to nine young trees in the historic park – trees that were nurtured after a fight to save the farm from suburban development two decades ago.

“It may not seem like much now, but [in] 20 years from now or 50, it will make a difference,” wrote the Friends of Jackson Farm.

Shortly after, the City of Maple Ridge issued a statement saying the trees will get to stay following concerns raised by residents.

“Filming requests are reviewed carefully to balance community and economic benefits with environmental impacts, community interests, operational needs and production requirements,” said the City. “The City understands that residents care deeply about Jackson Farm and the trees.”

Despite this, officials maintain that the three- or four-foot-tall trees were not planted by the City, nor are they protected under the City’s Tree Protection and Management bylaw.

“Jackson Farm is currently classified as undeveloped parkland and is not a public park,” the City clarified. “The City will engage the community as part of a masterplan process for Jackson Farm in the future as identified in the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan.”

The Jacksons were a family of settlers who established their farmland in Maple Ridge back in 1901. Farming ceased before the 2000s, but community members continue to preserve the area for use as a green space.

HBO’s The Last of Us is set to begin filming at Jackson Farm on Monday, August 24, and wrap up the following day.
