CHILLIWACK — If candidates are measured by their relentless zeal for all things Chilliwack, like diving in and getting your hands dirty so to speak, Chilliwack businessman Mike McLatchy might fit the mold.

For over 40 years, McLatchy has lived, worked, raised a family, and steadfastly volunteered for a number of noble causes, all in Chilliwack. He prides himself on being a tenacious problem-solver, according to his website (www.mikemclatchy.com).

But he says Chilliwack can and should do better as it expands and grows to a city well over 110,000.

“I am running for City Council because I can make an impact and contribute to positive changes for the good of families, businesses and the community,” McLatchy said right on his website. “I love Chilliwack. It’s home to me and my family. Chilliwack is a great city with a strong sense of community and many amazing facilities and services. We also have our challenges due to our rapid growth. Our City is doing a good job. I believe we can do better.”

McLatchy started Fairfield Island Heating and Plumbing 25 years ago and says he understands the needs, frustrations, and priorities of local businesses, which he considers the backbone of the local economy. He started a restaurant, Twisted Thistle, in 2019 but it succumbed to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has since re-opened the Lindell Beach General Store with a friend of his.

When it comes to community, McLatchy has plenty of street cred. He coached youth soccer for 25 years and earned the 2013 Sport Hero by the Chilliwack Times; he mentored many youth athletes who have gone on to play university and semi-pro levels. As a proud and active member of the Chilliwack Fraser Rotary Club, McLatchy has been a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and recently received a Polio Plus award from Rotary International. During his term as president of Chilliwack Fraser Rotary, he led a humanitarian mission to the Philippines and strengthened ties with its sister club in Japan.

He has participated in many community volunteer activities such as the Rotary Trail clean-ups, the Chilliwack Fire training grounds, Zero Barrier School Playground projects, Meals on Wheels, the pediatric wing at Chilliwack General Hospital, the building and maintenance of the Gwynne Vaughan Park Pavilion, as well as raising money for YMCA Kids programs and a CT Scanner for Chilliwack General Hospital.

Further, thanks to the positive support from his businesses, he’s been fortunate enough to sponsor the Chilliwack Hospice Society, Chilliwack Children’s Charitable Foundation, and Chilliwack Community Services, and donate sports equipment to underprivileged local youth. McLatchy has sat on the boards of Chilliwack FC, Chilliwack Fraser Rotary and the Chilliwack Fraser Charitable Foundation. McLatchy is part of the Chilliwack Hospital Foundation’s 500 Club.

“There is a lot more work to be done,” McLatchy says on his website. “I’m a hard worker; I’m tenacious and a problem-solver. I have energy, empathy and a passion to make Chilliwack a better place for families. I’m a leader and a team player and I believe that together, we can achieve incredible things for this amazing city.”

Mike and his wife Natalie, who works in management for the Correctional Service of Canada, live in rural Chilliwack on a hobby farm. Their daughters Sarah and Jenna both attended local schools and competed in sports and music. They have three grandchildren.
