CHILLIWACK — Shane Kooyman, the 18-year-old who finished third in last Saturday’s by-election to fill a vacancy on the Chilliwack school board, might not be done with municipal politics.

Kooyman, who garnered 94 votes out of 7,238 votes cast in what was likely a very disappointing outcome for him, wrote in a social media post this past week that he may run again.

“As an 18-year old running for office for the first time, this experience has been an incredible learning opportunity,” said Kooyman, a grade 12 student in Chilliwack. “I’ve gained valuable insights and skills that will help me be even better prepared and more mature next time. October 2026 (winking emoji).”

October 2026 is when the next municipal election will be held in Chilliwack for council, school board, Cultus Lake Park Board and Fraser Valley Regional District.

Kooyman said despite the vote tallies, he’s still grateful for the support he received throughout the electoral campaign.

“It meant a lot to see so many people rally behind me, and I truly appreciate everyone who took the time to practice their democratic right,” Kooyman said. “I especially want to thank my family and friends for their encouragement and for helping spread the word about my campaign.”

Kooyman extended congratulations to Throness for winning the election, as well as positive sentiments to Katie Bartel as she returns to her role as chair of an important SD33 committee.

“I wish the best for Laurie Thrones on his new position and hope he receives a warm welcome to the Board,” Kooyman said. “And also wishing Katie all the best on her return back to her DPAC position.”
