CHILLIWACK — A frequently clogged-up intersection in Sardis is due for some much-needed traffic improvements starting this month.

According to an update issued Friday, September 2, the City of Chilliwack announced that property acquisitions at the intersection of Vedder Road and South Sumas Road are nearing completion. The project has been awarded to a design build contractor, and coordination with B.C. Hydro and Telus is underway, with utility pole relocations awaiting schedule schedule confirmation.

While the design was set to be completed in July, the City anticipates road, drainage and electrical construction will commence sometime this fall, with an expected construction timeline of September through November 2022.

Improvements will feature a traffic signal expansion and approximately 260 metres of road widening complete with paving, conversion of overhead B.C. Hydro and Telus to underground utilities, drainage, streetlights, curb and sidewalk.

Motorists heading southbound on Vedder and turning left onto eastbound South Sumas Road often create traffic congestion and bottlenecks for drivers behind them in the left lane of the four-lane arterial southbound because there’s no dedicated left-turn light for them.

Traffic volume turning left onto South Sumas Road from southbound Vedder Road has increased in recent years due to significant residential construction east of Vedder Road in that vicinity of Sardis. This can be attributed to a multi-phase, newer subdivision at 45900 South Sumas Road.

Motorists heading northbound on Vedder Road already have the benefit of a dedicated left-turn traffic light that feeds onto westbound South Sumas Road.
