Abbotsford Police warn of vehicle break-ins ahead of final Christmas shopping weekend
ABBOTSFORD — With the arrival of the final weekend of the Christmas shopping season, the Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) is urging residents to take extra precautions to protect their vehicles and valuables from thieves.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) AbbyPD reminds residents of the importance of vigilance when parking in shopping areas. Police recommend locking car doors, placing valuables out of sight in the trunk, and opting for well-lit parking spots. It says the simple steps will reduce the likelihood of a break-in.
Data from the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) highlights the severity of the issue, with 46,600 vehicle break-ins and 7,500 car thefts reported in 2020 alone. Commonly targeted items include smartphones, tablets, laptops, work tools, and personal identification, all of which make vehicles prime targets for theft.
