CHILLIWACK — Fresh off a 53-36 road victory over Kamloops, the Valley Huskers had a golden opportunity to make it three wins in a row in front of their home fans Saturday night.

Wide receiver and special teams ace Luc Rodriguez carried the torch for the Huskers, electrifying the Exhibition Field crowd with a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown and a 68-yard touchdown pass on his only throwing attempt, as the Huskers cruised to a dominant 33-5 win over the Langley Rams in a hard-hitting Canadian Junior Football League game.

According to information compiled by Valley Huskers assistant coach Ryk Piché, formerly the varsity head coach at G.W. Graham, the Huskers took control of the game from the opening kickoff by excelling in all facets of the game. Rodriguez highlighted the spectacular effort by recording 175 punt return yards on eight returns, and hauling in three catches for 49 yards.

“I felt we played a complete game this week,” said Valley Huskers coach Bob Reist. “We are capable of being a really good team when we play four quarters. I was impressed with our will to win. It was a hard-fought victory against a good football team.”

In a rivalry that often produces fireworks, the Valley Huskers showed they were all gas and no brakes, cementing their spot as a playoff contender with a dominating performance. Quarterback Tyran Duval led the offense by going 17-of-36 passing for 253 yards. Despite an interception, Duval kept the Huskers’ offense moving efficiently by distributing the ball across the field to keep the Rams on their heels. Wide receiver Steven Koniuck hauled in 4 receptions for 144 yards and a touchdown, earning him Player of the Week honours.

The Huskers’ defense was a brick wall, holding Langley to just a single field goal. The Rams’ other two points came from a safety conceded by the Huskers for better field position. The defensive effort stifled any hope of a Rams comeback, as the Huskers’ physicality set the tone throughout the game, which was dedicated to seniors and billet hosts.

The resounding win could have significant playoff implications since the Huskers hold the tiebreaker over the Rams in points for and against. With the postseason looming, this could determine whether the Huskers host a playoff game or face the challenge of traveling to Kelowna or Nanaimo.
