MISSION – Police in Mission are investigating a pair of incidents in which gas lines were tampered with last Sunday afternoon, one at a construction site where a new apartment building is being erected.

RCMP say the initial episode happened around 2 p.m. near 2nd Avenue and Welton Street after a gas leak was reported and a modified gas line was discovered.

A subsequent search around the building turned up a pair of small fires, with multiple sink and bathroom faucets left running – flooding several floors of the building.

Thermostats and ovens in several units within the complex had also been turned on, say police.

A K-9 search of the building didn’t locate any suspects.

Two hours later, investigators say officers were called out to another gas leak on First Avenue just a half kilometre from the apartment building on Second.

Several fittings from a gas meter located in an alleyway at a business between Grand Street and James Street were removed.

Once again, no suspects were located in the surrounding area, RCMP said.

“No motive for these incidents of mischief and arson has been identified,” a Mission RCMP spokesperson said.

“Investigators are still in the process of canvassing for any other CCTV footage in the area.”
