Air Quality advisory issued for Fraser Valley

Jul 8, 2024 | 2:32 PM

VANCOUVER — The Metro Vancouver Regional District has issued an Air Quality Advisory due to elevated levels of ground-level ozone. The advisory, which covers an area from Vancouver to Hope, was prompted by hot and sunny weather combined with local emissions. It is expected to remain in effect for several days.

Ground-level ozone is a type of air pollution that forms when pollutants from sources such as vehicles and industrial activities react in the presence of sunlight. This can lead to poor air quality and pose respiratory health risks.

Residents are urged to consider postponing or limiting outdoor activities, particularly those at higher risk, including individuals with lung and heart conditions, diabetes, pregnant people, infants, children, and older adults.

Officials recommend seeking out cleaner and cooler air, emphasizing that heat and air pollution can occur simultaneously. Heat poses a significant health risk, and residents are advised to stay cool and hydrated. Utilizing portable or central air conditioning at home is suggested, and if homes become too hot, community spaces with air conditioning are recommended.
