ABBOTSFORD – The City of Abbotsford announced Monday that its city manager will retire after more than 30 years of dedicated public service.

Peter Sparanese, who guided the city through two major flooding events and the COVID-19 pandemic over the past eight years, has announcement his retirement.

“For the past 11 years, including eight as City Manager, Peter has been an invaluable part of our organization, guiding the City through significant infrastructure and program advancements, the COVID-19 pandemic, and two major flooding events,” said Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens. “We are grateful for his leadership and we will greatly truly miss his calm, steady, thoughtful and strategic guidance at City Hall.”

Sparanese spearheaded administration of the city’s $514 million budget and provided leadership to more than 1,100 municipal employees since 2018, the municipality said. He will remain with the city to support the recruitment and transition to his successor.

“This was not an easy decision, and while there is never a perfect time for an organizational transition, the upcoming municipal election presents an opportunity for new leadership to support the next Council as it begins its term,” said Sparanese. “During my time with the City, I have had the privilege of working alongside some of the brightest and most innovative municipal professionals. Their commitment to serving the community and making Abbotsford the best place to live, work, and explore is truly inspiring. I am grateful for this experience and leave with many great memories.”

Sparanese made $350,103 in 2024, according to Fraser Valley Current.

The city has retained PFM Executive Search to lead the recruitment process.

Reporting to City Council, the city manager is responsible for leading the organization in delivering Council’s strategic priorities, business plans, programs, and services.
