Female motorcyclist deceased after collision with RV near Squamish; Hwy. 99 closed for 7+ hours

SQUAMISH – A female motorcyclist was pronounced deceased Sunday evening on Highway 99 near Squamish after she struck an RV vehicle amid reports she and another motorcycle rider were speeding and driving erratically.

According to a statement from BC RCMP spokesperson Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, a BC Highway Patrol officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 99 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday evening (July 5). The officer observed two motorcycles who were reportedly speeding and driving erratically.

The BCHP officer left their position along the highway and moments later located one of the motorcyclists who was involved in a collision with a recreational vehicle.

The female motorcyclist was declared deceased at the scene.

The IIO BC has been notified and are investigating police actions in this incident.

The IIO released a statement mid-afternoon Monday saying that BCHP attempted a traffic stop on two motorcycles travelling together southbound on Highway 99. The motorcycles did not stop, the IIO said.  Bridge.

The IIO will consider the following at the beginning of each investigation:

  1. If there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, or a death; and
  2. If there is a connection between the serious harm/death and officer action or inaction.

If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.

As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, police cannot release any further information about the incident.

The Sea to Sky Highway was closed for several hours before it reopened sometime after 1 a.m.

In the meantime, BCHP continues to to investigate the incident and is seeking witnesses and dashcam video. Anyone who may have observed the motorcyclists, or may have dashcam video of them, between Britannia Beach and the crash scene are asked to contact 604-526-9744.
