CHILLIWACK — Over 15 firefighters from the Chilliwack Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire in the 5800 block of Vedder Road Sunday (Jul. 31), as crews worked to extinguish a balcony fire in a 3-storey residential apartment.

At approximately 1 p.m. Sunday, firefighters from Halls 1 and 4 responded to a fire from an exterior second-floor suite balcony in a multi-tenant complex. Fire personnel reported seeing light grey smoke emanating from the exterior of the building once they arrived on scene.

According to a statement from Chilliwack Fire, crews quickly established a water supply and performed an exterior attack to rapidly put out the fire, thus minimizing fire damage to a section of the balcony.

The residential tenant was not home at the time of the fire. One tenant within the building used a fire extinguisher to knock down the fire, Chilliwack Fire said. Other tenants quickly activated the building fire alarm system and assisted with evacuation.
