YALE — Authorities are investigating a fatal collision that claimed the life of a 64-year-old motorcyclist north of Hope late Monday (Jul. 11) night along Highway 1.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police from the Boston Bar and Hope detachments responded to a collision at about 11:40 p.m. that occurred on Highway 1 south of the Sailor Bar Tunnel, between Yale and Boston Bar.

The crash happened after a tractor-trailer unit travelling northbound lost a portion of its load while turning a corner. A southbound motorcycle carrying two riders from the Lower Mainland collided with debris from the big rig.

Police, Yale Fire Department, and B.C. Ambulance attended and provided urgent medical attention to the motorists. The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene.

“On behalf of the Hope and Boston Bar RCMP, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family,” said Staff Sergeant Dwayne Farlin, detachment commander of the Hope RCMP. “This truly was a tragic collision and our thoughts are with the victim’s family.”

The passenger on the motorcycle was transported to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement, B.C. Coroner’s Service, and investigators from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services (ICARS) attended the scene.

Both vehicles involved were seized for mechanical inspections. Highway 1 was closed for several hours as police and partner agencies investigated.

Anyone that travelled the Fraser Canyon on the evening of July 11, or persons with dash cam footage or information related to this crash, are asked to contact Boston Bar RCMP Constable Tessa Liu at 604-867-9333.
