YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Unlocking B.C.’s true potential

Jan 24, 2024 | 8:00 AM

British Columbia is blessed with abundant natural resources — a fact that should make our province an economic powerhouse. From timber to minerals, our resources have the potential to create jobs, boost incomes, and help the world transition to a greener future that we all want to see.

Yet, despite this potential, we find ourselves grappling with missed opportunities and mismanagement under the current NDP government.

As a member of the BC United Caucus, I am excited to share our collective vision for revitalizing the resource sector through our Resource Prosperity Plan. Under the leadership of Kevin Falcon, we are committed to unleashing the true potential of British Columbia’s natural resources to combat Premier David Eby’s worsening middle-class squeeze on families across the province. These strategic changes are essential in supporting world-class health care, education and other services that British Columbians rely on.

One of our key priorities is to invest massively in clean power projects, transmission, and electrification. The NDP’s abandonment of clean power projects has left us reliant on power imports when we have incredible potential right here in B.C. for clean power to electrify our economy. We’ll explore opportunities for significant new electricity generation, electrification, and transmission projects to enable natural resource development, including fast-tracking electricity transmission to B.C.’s North Coast.

After seven years of the NDP, delays in project reviews and permitting have reached a critical point. It’s why we’ll adopt results-based performance measures, eliminate regulatory duplication, and collaborate with First Nations to expedite permitting reviews. We’re committed to getting good projects approved efficiently and responsibly.

In B.C., we believe First Nations should be genuine financial equity partners in resource projects. I’m especially excited about our commitment to establish a loan guarantee program, similar to the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation, to create opportunities for First Nations to participate as critical financial partners. It’s about fostering collaboration and shared prosperity for all who call British Columbia home.

Many of you know we’ve also committed to ensuring that excessive carbon taxes do not burden our resource sector. If the federal government scraps the carbon tax, we’ll eliminate it here in B.C., ensuring our resource producers remain competitive. The NDP government in B.C. has made it very clear that taking immediate action to help struggling families is not a priority for them.

We’ll be focused on positioning and aggressively marketing B.C. as a leading provider of sustainably produced resources, including LNG, critical metals, and minerals. Unlike the BC NDP government, the BC United Caucus recognizes the importance of our resources in the global shift towards a cleaner future.

Our Resource Prosperity Plan builds on a commitment to address the cost of living crisis, scrap the NDP’s destructive CleanBC Plan, and focus on accurate climate results that provide more jobs, higher incomes, and lower taxes for British Columbians.

After seven years of an NDP government, it’s time for a new approach that unlocks the full potential of our resource sector and benefits all British Columbians. With the BC United Caucus’ Resource Prosperity Plan, we can create a prosperous and sustainable future for our province.
