CHILLIWACK — Snow and colder weather has started to arrive across parts of the B.C. Interior this weekend, dumping snow onto high-elevation highways leading in and out of the Lower Mainland.

DriveBC issued a Travel Advisory along Highway 3 through the Allison Pass Friday (Jan. 5) morning. Environment Canada has issued a snowfall advisory for the area, predicting up to 20 cm of snow.

Passes along the Coquihalla Highway are also seeing snowfall. DriveBC has ordered commercial trucks to use chains to operate north of the Box Canyon area, 33 km north of Hope. Semi-trucks must chain up or face the possibility of fines.

To the west, Highway 99 leading north from Vancouver to Whistler is also under a Travel Advisory after Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning. The Squamish and Whistler areas expect up to 20 cm of snow. DriveBC warns visibility may be reduced suddenly at times by the snow.

While temperatures through the Fraser Valley will remain in the average range through the weekend, highs are expected to drop early next week and snow is possible during overnight hours.
