Agassiz prison staff intercept over $138,000 in drugs, contraband
AGASSIZ — Correctional staff at a prison west of Agassiz are constantly on the lookout for illicit drugs coming into the Mountain Institution, and for good reason.
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) announced Friday (Nov. 10) that as a result of the vigilance of staff members, contraband was seized on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 8-9 at Mountain Institution, a medium security federal institution. The contraband items seized included 184 grams of cannabis concentrate and 94 grams of methamphetamine. The total estimated institutional value of these seizures is $139,000.
The police have been notified and the institution is investigating.
CSC says it uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors.
