YOUR PERSPECTIVE: A ‘Safer B.C.’: Kevin Falcon’s public safety plan

Oct 4, 2023 | 8:00 AM

Amidst our province’s growing public safety crisis, I know concerns for the safety and well-being of our loved ones have become increasingly pronounced. I think of my daughter’s daily commute to work in Vancouver, the increasing vulnerability of our seniors to random attacks, and the need to protect all those who call this province home. The safety of our families, friends, and all British Columbians is critical, no matter which part of the province you live in.

No one is immune to the failures of the current management of public safety, even here in the Fraser Valley. Last week, we learned that a Chilliwack man charged with two counts of second-degree murder was released on bail and conditions. In the same week, Abbotsford police caught someone who also was breaching several court-ordered conditions from previous charges, armed with bear mace, dangerous tools, a machete, and a stolen vehicle.

Clearly, David Eby and the NDP’s approach to public safety in British Columbia is not working.

We’ve witnessed a distressing 75 percent increase in the rate of no-charge assessments — a situation where individuals arrested for serious crimes find themselves released without facing any consequences. It’s a disheartening cycle that has chronic repeat offenders slipping through the cracks, while law-abiding citizens bear the brunt of the consequences. For instance, last year alone, the same group of 40 individuals was responsible for a staggering 6,385 negative police interactions in Vancouver.

This is why Kevin Falcon’s “Safer B.C.” plan — a comprehensive blueprint designed to restore public safety, is so critical to close the revolving door of justice and prioritize the interests of law-abiding British Columbians.

A BC United government would immediately fill the 500 existing police vacancies across the province. We are determined to provide the resources necessary to attract and retain more officers, offering incentives such as hiring bonuses and housing allowances to ease their vital work. This includes expanding police training opportunities right here in B.C., allowing new recruits to train where they will serve.

Our plan goes further to address the reckless decriminalization of illicit drugs, which has encroached on our public spaces, including parks and playgrounds. We need to reclaim these areas for the benefit of children and families.

Kevin Falcon’s bold and dynamic plan emphasizes alternative sentencing and rehabilitation, offering individuals facing sentencing a choice between traditional incarceration and secure treatment. We must help people reintegrate into society with the necessary support driven by compassion and a commitment to community safety.

Every crime matters, from shoplifting to vandalism, under our plan. It prioritizes accountability and ensures that all crimes have consequences, while also expanding community service options for minor offences — a more balanced and equitable system of justice. This includes pursuing civil consequences for drug traffickers whose actions result in death. Just as servers can be held accountable for drunk driving, we believe that drug dealers who sell lethal substances should face significant consequences.

The BC United plan places the well-being of everyday British Columbians at the forefront, and that’s a commitment we can all stand behind.

In a region like the Fraser Valley, where the sense of community runs deep, it’s imperative that we support initiatives that prioritize public safety amidst a system that isn’t currently working. Kevin Falcon’s ‘Safer B.C.’ plan is a call to action — a call to build a safer, more secure future for all British Columbians.
