CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack Chiefs open the new BCHL season Friday night when they travel to Langley to face the Rivermen at 7:15 p.m.

The Chiefs will be looking to build off a successful playoff run last season that carried them to the BCHL semifinal. After a fifth-place regular season finish (28 – 22 – 1 – 3), Chilliwack stormed through playoffs, upsetting Coquitlam in the first round and Nanaimo in the second round before falling to Alberni Valley in the Coastal Division final.

Coach and General Manager Brian Maloney returns to Chilliwack for his eighth year with the team, his sixth as the Head Coach. He is joined on the bench by Associate Coach Andrew Shaw once again this season.

“I am grateful to Brian for the opportunity to take on a larger role within the Chiefs organization. Over the past four years, I’ve received excellent mentorship and countless opportunities to grow as a coach. I’m excited to transition into this role and help develop and move our players to the next level,” said Shaw.

This season, Shaw’s main focus with the team will be on the defense and the penalty kill.

“Something I feel is lacking in coaching these days is teaching players about those finer details of the game. That is something Coach Shaw excels in. We’re very excited for him to be able to take on this larger role with the team,” said Maloney.

Newcomer Jamie Jackson has been named the Chiefs Director of Players Development and Programs Coordinator. Jackson has a strong resume. After years in the PJHL and the BCEHL, he joined the Coquitlam Express as an Assistant coach in 2018. Jackson has also served as Head Coach for Team BC at the WHL Cup in 2019 and 2021. In 2019, the team earned a Bronze Medal, and in 2021 a Gold. Jackson was also awarded the Development Award in 2019.

“We’re very excited to have Jaime come on board. He’s an established coach with a long history of helping to develop players who are always ready for the next level,” said Maloney.

The Chiefs will have Eric Williams returning at the club’s goaltending consultant. This will be Williams second season with the club.

While the regular season begins on the road, the Chiefs play their home opener one night later. The Chiefs are scheduled to host the Victoria Grizzlies Saturday at the Chilliwack Coliseum at 6 p.m.

89.5 JR Country is the voice of the Chiefs this season. Chiefs games will be broadcast weekly and other games will be streamed online at 89.5 JR Country.
