Wildfire smoke expected in the Fraser Valley airshed this weekend

CHILLIWACK — Smoke from distant wildfires is expected to move over the Fraser Valley this weekend and could lead to reduced air quality and slightly cooler temperatures.

The smoke is coming primarily from wildfires in northeastern B.C. and northern Alberta. Wildfires in those regions have resulted in several evacuation orders for residents in those regions. As of Saturday (May 13) morning, there are eight fires burning out of control in northeastern B.C. and 21 fires categorized as out-of-control in Alberta.

The smoke is not expected to be choking as it was last summer, when wildfires burned in the Chilliwack and Stein Valley areas. However those most susceptible to poor air quality may experience some issues.

According to Firesmoke.ca, the smoke is forecast to be flushed from the Fraser Valley Monday evening, leaving Fraser Valley residents to enjoy mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures through the remainder of the week.
