Driver dies after rear-ending a commercial vehicle on Hwy. 1 west of Hope

HOPE — The driver of a commercial vehicle died earlier this week in the widely-publicized crash on Highway 1 west of Hope that involved three vehicles, resulting in the closure of the highway for over 12 hours.

According to a news release from Corporal Mike Moore of the B.C. Highway Patrol, officers from the B.C. Highway Patrol South Coast Chilliwack division responded shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 to a report of a collision involving three commercial vehicles west of Hope.

The incident happened eastbound on Highway 1 near Hunter Creek, exit 160. The highway was closed eastbound from approximately 5 p.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning.

Members of the Integrated Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Services (ICARS), BCEHS, Hope Fire Department, Hope Search and Rescue, and the B.C. Coroner’s Service were also in attendance.

The driver of one of the involved commercial vehicles was pronounced deceased at the scene. No further details on the deceased are being released at this time pending identity and next of kin notification, B.C. Highway Patrol said.

While still in the early stages, initial investigation points to the commercial vehicle driven by the deceased rear-ending one of the other commercial vehicles that had been stopped in construction traffic at a high rate of speed, Corporal Moore said. The other drivers involved are cooperating with investigators and there are no other significant injuries. No charges are expected at this time.
