CHILLIWACK — At least five fire engines and 30 firefighters from five fire halls of the Chilliwack Fire Department responded to a garage fire at a home in the 5500 block of Alpine Crescent in Promontory Saturday afternoon.

Fire crews were dispatched at approximately 4:12 p.m. Saturday (Apr. 15) after a vehicle caught fire in the garage in the hilltop neighbourhood.

Crews were able to secure a water supply and contain the fire to the garage. Thick plumes of smoke could be seen emanating from the neighbourhood, located just off Teskey Road, from a distance at the base of Promontory Road.

Fire Chief Ian Josephson said in a press release that four occupants were able to escape from the home unharmed. The majority of fire, smoke and water damage was limited to the garage, vehicle and main floor living area with minor smoke damage occurring on the second floor.

Emergency Support Services personnel provided the homeowners with basic support as the home is not habitable, Josephson said.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

At 4:50 p.m., the fire had been knocked down and crews were going into an overhaul mode.

Josephson said the fire originated in the vehicle’s engine compartment and is considered accidental.
