CHILLIWACK — On top of Christmas meals for the community, Easter dinner packages, discounted meat, and countless community initiatives, Tydel Foods in downtown Chilliwack is taking it to the next level with yet another community program to help those less fortunate.

Brigida Crosbie of Tydel Foods confirmed Thursday evening (Apr. 13) in a Facebook message to Fraser Valley Today that she will be starting a meal assistance program called “Our Daily Bread” for seniors struggling with food insecurity at a time when inflation is rampant and housing and rental costs keep rising.

The verbiage “our daily bread” comes from the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6.

“Now more than ever, we need to turn to each other for support,” Crosbie wrote. “Seniors 65 and over will be able to come into our shop at 45766 Patten Avenue to sign up. One time a week you will be teamed up with a community volunteer who will make and bring you a meal for free.”

The Tydel Foods food assistance program is designed to help seniors in need gain access to nutritionally balanced food and meals, Crosbie says, and is especially designed to help them address food insecurity.

“Unfortunately, one out of every six adults deals with hunger or food scarcity on a daily basis. This is quite alarming since we iknow that proper nutrition is crucial at this stage of life. Having a healthy, balanced diet can prevent or delay conditions that are related to poor nutrition in older adults.”

Crosbie would love to get this program off the ground with the help of volunteers in Chilliwack who can make and deliver a meal once a week. She asks that prospective volunteers reach out to her at 604-316-6015 and come into her shop just to introduce themselves.

“This is a fabulous way to build relationships and to give a senior who may be skipping meals just so they can continue to pay for their medication and the roof over their head, the gift of your friendship, and the gift of continued pride and dignity,” Crosbie wrote. “We are our children’s example!”

Tydel Foods continues to offer a $100 meat package at a discounted price of $50, once a month, for any seniors who need help. Crosbie says seniors can also come into the shop and take any food that has been donated by its customers on a daily basis.

“This helps our struggling seniors in our community to be able to put food on their table and not suffer in silence anymore,” Crosbie said. “Together, as a community, we are helping our low-income seniors.”
