ABBOTSFORD — While many people were enjoying the Easter long weekend with family, cooking up a feast for guests, or attending Easter egg hunts, the Abbotsford Police Department dealt with several violent calls.

According to a tweet Tuesday morning from the municipal police agency, Abbotsford Police handled hundreds of files over the Easter long weekend.

“Over the long weekend, our officers were extremely busy with over 300 police files. In addition, officers attended many violent calls, removed 15 impaired drivers off our roads and took a loaded handgun off a 16-year-old youth to highlight a few incidents.”

The 300-plus calls featured some eye-popping statistics, including six assaults, six break-and-enters, one incident involving a firearm, one home invasion, 15 impaired drivers, four missing persons, two robberies, one stabbing, three sudden deaths, and 15 warrants executed.

According to Sgt. Paul Walker, AbbyPD responded to a weapons file in the area of Edgehill and Townline road. Callers told police personnel that they observed a group of approximately 20 males gathering in a parking lot with their vehicles. Callers advised that the men appeared to have weapons such as bats and knives, which was concerning to them. Once police arrived, the group began to scatter once they saw law enforcement approach. Two men were observed running from the area.

During this time one of the responding officers noted one of the men running away from the area pull out a suspected weapon from his waistband in an attempt to discard it. The man was detained by Abbotsford police officers. During the recovery of the item, it was found to be a loaded handgun. A 16-year-old youth is now facing firearm charges.

“Each day our officers are faced with the unknown when responding to calls for service or conducting traffic stops,” Sgt. Walker said. “It’s moments like these when we rely on our training to ensure public safety. The men and women of AbbyPD are committed to making Abbotsford the safest city in B.C. We truly appreciate the strength in community here in Abbotsford.”
