ABBOTSFORD — The Abbotsford 2023 55+ BC Games are just a few months away, and the city is gearing up for the event. The Games are set to take place from August 22-26, 2023, marking it the 34th 55+ BC Games. The Games are expected to draw over 3,500 participants from 12 zones across British Columbia.

The 55+ BC Games will primarily take place in Abbotsford, with the communities of Chilliwack, Maple Ridge, Mission, Harrison Hot Springs, and the Township of Langley hosting some of the games at their local venues. The Games will have 29 sports, including athletics, badminton, cycling, golf, ice hockey, and swimming, among others. Besides the sporting events, there will be special events, including the opening ceremonies and accreditation, which will provide volunteers with a chance to get involved.

To ensure that the Games run smoothly, the Abbotsford Games will coordinate approximately 75-80 volunteer chairs with twelve volunteer directors. An additional estimated 1,500 volunteers are needed in the planning and staging of the Games. The Games’ organizers are thrilled to announce that volunteer registration is now open.

April 16 to 22 marks National Volunteer Week, and it’s an opportunity to celebrate the people who make events like the 55+ BC Games possible. Brenda Kawasaki, a retired teacher of over thirty years, is the first volunteer to register for the Abbotsford 2023 55+ BC Games.

Brenda has been married for over thirty-five years and has four kids and two grandchildren. She grew up in the Lower Mainland but has lived in the Fraser Valley for over thirty years. Brenda has volunteered with the Mission Skating Club, BC/YK Section, and Skate Canada for over 20 years as her daughter was a figure skater. She has also volunteered for the 2010 Olympics, Four Continents, Skate Canada International, National Championships, and numerous regional and provincial competitions.

“Volunteering with the Games is another adventure to share with my friends. I love meeting people of all ages, working, learning, and just being together, laughing and talking. It’s a win-win situation for all parties. I’m 57 and can’t imagine life without volunteering. Volunteering allows you to build confidence and camaraderie, give back to the community, and, best of all, gain opportunities to learn, grow, and add new friends,” said Brenda Kawasaki.

The Games’ organizers are delighted to have Brenda Kawasaki as their first volunteer and encourage others to follow her lead. Volunteering for events like the 55+ BC Games is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community, make new friends, and learn new skills. The Abbotsford 2023 55+ BC Games promises to be an exciting event, and with the support of volunteers like Brenda, it’s sure to be a huge success.
