Three fires break out in Hope Thursday, including one at a homeless camp where tents and tarps burned

HOPE – Firefighters in Hope responded to three blazes across the community Thursday morning, including one at an encampment that involved tarps and tents on fire.

According to a statement from the Hope Fire Department, five firefighters from two engines were dispatched at 6:15 a.m. for a fire burning in the root of a downed tree at the mouth of the Coquihalla River. No injuries were reported, and the cause is under investigation.

Roughly an hour later at 7:15 a.m., six firefighters and four apparatus were called to a fire at a homeless camp on Water Avenue.

Tents, tarps, refuse, and nearby trees were burning when crews arrived. No injuries were reported, and the cause remains under investigation.

At 10 a.m., Hope Fire was paged to a reported outbuilding fire near Exit 173 on Hwy. 3. Ten firefighters on three engines arrived to find a fully involved temporary structure with extensions into the interface and a 10 × 20 metre area of refuse burning within an unhoused encampment.

Hope Fire Department says bystanders tried to slow the spread of the blaze. Crews quickly contained and extinguished the fire.

Two patients were treated for smoke inhalation, and one sustained additional burn injuries. BCEHS and RCMP personnel supported on scene. The cause remains under investigation.

With today’s three fire calls, Hope Fire Dept. has now responded to over 700 calls for service in 2026.
