Agassiz RCMP stop speeder who said he was ‘only going 140’ in a posted 90 km/h zone

In the detachment’s latest biweekly snapshot, additional proactive RCMP work has led to several impaired driving investigations and other traffic enforcement, with one officer being able to stop three impaired drivers in two nights.

The officer was patrolling Harrison Hot Springs when they stopped a driver who was trying burnouts while leaving a parking lot. The driver then blew a “WARN” on the breathalyzer, leading to an immediate roadside ban and seizure of the vehicle.

The next night, a driver who “repeatedly” failed to signal while travelling through Agassiz was also stopped after a roadside test and received a 24-hour driving prohibition. A sober passenger took over the vehicle to drive both occupants home.

Later that shift, back in Harrison, the officer spotted “several” traffic violations and stopped the vehicle. The driver’s breath sample produced a “FAIL,” and they refused to give another, leading to another immediate roadside ban and vehicle seizure.

Another officer patrolling Agassiz in the early morning noticed an SUV that seemed “out of place,” and a licence plate check found that the registered owner held an invalid driver’s licence.

After pulling the car over, the driver admitted to drinking alcohol the previous evening, and when the officer learned that they had a history of roadside prohibitions, the individual was arrested for impaired driving.

The officer then collected breath samples, and the driver was released to appear in court at a later date. A report has been forwarded to assess charges.

Police responded to 153 calls for service between August 31 and September 13.
