CHILLIWACK — A clinic for new and expectant mothers in Chilliwack and surrounding communities has marked its hard launch with a ribbon-cutting on Friday (Sept. 18).

The new Chilliwack Maternity Care Clinic (CMCC): Ehó:temáwtxw opened with co-leads Dr. Alison Henry and registered midwife Winifred Angus, who welcomed attendees and led a clinic tour after the ceremony.

“Today we feel pretty hopeful about the future,” Dr. Henry said.

The clinic had a soft opening in June, and since then, Dr. Henry said health care providers have been stepping up for a chance to work at the space.

“Around 2015, there were roughly 22 family doctors doing primary care obstetrics in Chilliwack, Hope and Agassiz. And as of June this year, we will only have four family doctors doing primary care obstetrics,” she said.

“With the dwindling maternity provider numbers, we had to do something otherwise maternity care would not be available in Chilliwack.”

The four doctors are joined by two registered midwives and three registered nurses.

Ehó:temáwtxw means “a home to wrap someone in care,” and Dr. Henry hopes the program can care for more pregnant women around the clock by increasing the number of healthcare providers working in the clinic.

“People should have care where they live,” said Henry. “The vision is to have a central hub where patients could come for centralized maternity care.”

Clinic data from June 8 to August 26 this year show the facility recorded 2,877 patient encounters for 1,096 unique patients, according to the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice.

The clinic is located on the ground floor of the Chilliwack General Hospital at 45600 Menholm Road.
