MISSION – Police in Mission say two teens who were illegally operating e-scooters in the city ignored a traffic stop but were later eventually caught and are now facing hundreds of dollars in fines.

Mission RCMP Corporal Harrison Mohr says an officer with Mission RCMP’s Traffic Services unit was recently monitoring traffic on Cedar Street near a playground zone when he observed two e-scooter road users.

A 15-year-old male was riding an electric limited-speed motorcycle, followed by a 16-year-old male riding an e-scooter. Police confirm both of these devices are prohibited on streets and sidewalks in Mission.

Both teens were riding in one of the vehicle traffic lanes, northbound on Cedar Street, and both were travelling above the posted speed limit. Neither rider was wearing a helmet.

Both also fled after the officer tried to pull them over.

Police say the two riders were identified soon after the incident.

“The 15-year-old and 16-year-old have received hundreds of dollars of tickets,” police said.

Corporal Mohr says e-scooters are illegal on public roadways and sidewalks in Mission and in many municipalities. Not only can riders be ticketed, but parents of riders under 16 can also be ticketed.

“Most importantly, they can be dangerous when ridden around other users,” police said. “Please stay safe and follow road-safety rules.”
