Maple Ridge firefighters urge residents to practice courtesy during emergency calls

MAPLE RIDGE – Firefighters in Maple Ridge are urging motorists to demonstrate a little courtesy when fire, medical or other emergency calls occur throughout the city, particularly after first responders had a busy start to their week on Monday.

The union representing firefighters, IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) Local 4449, says fire crews have responded to over 30 calls across the city since 7 a.m. Monday morning (Aug. 17). Of those 30 calls, two were commercial structure fires.

With first responders criss-crossing the city, firefighters are reminding motorists to yield to first responders.

“If an emergency vehicle is approaching with lights and sirens, please pull over and give it room to pass safely. When passing an active scene, slow down and give emergency vehicles and crews plenty of space,” IAFF Local 4449 said.

A second reminder seems like common sense, but it needs to be said: don’t drive over fire hoses.

“Never drive over fire hose. Even if it looks flat or unused, it may still be supplying water or could be needed at any moment,” IAFF Local 4449 said. “Driving over it can damage the hose, interrupt water supply and create a serious safety issue. It is also a ticketable offence.”

Last but not least, motorists are asked to kindly respect road closures and traffic control measures during emergency calls.

“Please respect road closures and traffic control. We plan and coordinate our water supply to reduce traffic impacts as much as possible, but depending on hydrant and incident locations, road closures are sometimes unavoidable,” IAFF Local 4449 said. “Thank you to our community for your patience and cooperation around active scenes.”
