HOPE – The agency that promotes tourism in the greater Hope area says last weekend’s inaugural Open House event at the Hope RCMP Detachment was a smashing success.

Tourism Hope Cascades & Canyons estimates approximately 500 people turned out for the first-ever Open House at 690 Old Hope Princeton Way, home to the Hope RCMP Detachment, on Saturday, August 15 from noon to 4 p.m.

“Apparently, inviting people to visit a police station voluntarily is a pretty great tourism strategy!” Tourism Hope Cascades & Canyons said. “The first Hope RCMP Open House was such a success, and it was wonderful to see so many visitors walk through the doors. Around 500 people toured the cell block, met local officers and specialty units, checked out the police and emergency vehicles, asked questions and took plenty of photos!”

Hope and the surrounding area still attract tourists from abroad, particularly during the busy summer travel season, and seeing police in a casual, welcoming environment is part of the fun, the agency noted.

“For many visitors, especially those travelling internationally, meeting the RCMP is a uniquely Canadian experience. We loved seeing all the excitement throughout the day!” Tourism Hope Cascades & Canyons said online.

The tourism agency is thanking local Mounties for opening their doors, making visitors and locals feel welcome, and creating such a memorable event.

“Thank you as well to all the participating emergency services and organizations, and to everyone who came out!” THCC said. “Turns out the cell block really can be a tourist attraction. It just helps when everyone is allowed to leave afterward.”
