One Chilliwack City Council candidate raised over $23,000 in 2022 election, but still didn’t win

CHILLIWACK — Mike McLatchy nearly outspent all 12 candidates for Chilliwack City Council in the October 2022 municipal election, according to election contribution reports released Thursday (Feb. 2) by Elections B.C.

The candidates for Chilliwack City Council in the past election consisted of, in alphabetical order, Brent Bowker, Craig Hill, Nicole Huitema Read, incumbent Chris Kloot, incumbent Jason Lum, Mike McLatchy, incumbent Bud Mercer, Jared Mumford, Amber Price, incumbent Jeff Shields, Debora Lynn Soutar, and incumbent Harv Westeringh.

McLatchy, who started Fairfield Island Heating and Plumbing over 25 years ago and has been an active Rotarian, reported $23,656.35 in both income and expenses. Thirty-one people donated to his campaign, including himself. Unfortunately for McLatchy, he came in ninth out of 12 candidates. Only one candidate, Jeff Shields, outspent McLatchy.

Chilliwack voters elected all five incumbents and political newcomer Huitema Read.

In other election filing reports:

* Harv Westeringh, a realtor who won reelection, reported $12,800 in income opposite $11,736 in expenses. He had 20 donors who donated $100 or more, including himself and his wife.

* Bud Mercer, with a 34-year career in law enforcement, recorded $16,817 in both income and expenses. He received 29 contributions from donors who gave $100 or more, many of which were from married couples. He also won his reelection effort.

* Debra Soutar, a retired forester who previously ran in 2018 but did not win in October 2022, recorded $5,783.43 in both income and expenses. She received 15 contributions of $100 or more. A fellow council candidate gave her campaign $500.

* Chris Kloot, a dairy farmer and realtor who won his third term in October 2022, reported $10,102.65 in income compared to $12,917.65 in expenses. He recorded 13 contributions of $100 or more.

* Amber Price, owner of The Bookman in downtown Chilliwack, reported $8,992 in income compared to $12,750 in expenses. She reported 33 contributions of $100 or more, including from three members of the Chilliwack school board. She finished seventh out of 12 candidates.

* Jason Lum, who was first elected to council in 2011, recorded $6,262 in campaign income against $10,177.39 in expenses. He received 11 campaign contributions of $100 or more, but was still the highest vote getter in October. He still had $741.76 left over from his 2014 city council campaign.

* Jared Mumford, an entrepreneur with his own small business, reported $18,097.53 in both income and expenses. He recorded 51 contributions of $100 or more. He finished eighth out of 12 candidates.

* Nicole Huitema Read, the general manager of Community Futures South Fraser, recorded $20,129.09 in both income and expenses. She had 45 campaign contributions of $100 or more. She finished third and was elected to council.

* Jeff Shields, a chartered accountant and longtime community volunteer in Chilliwack, reported $14,752.19 in income compared to $23,793.93 in expenses, a deficit of nearly $9,000, but he was still elected in October. He reported 20 campaign contributions of $100 or more. He finished fifth.

* Brent Bowker, a stay-at-home father of two who previously worked in the tech industry, recorded $150.72 in income and expenses. He reported one contribution.

* Craig Hill, the longtime publisher of The Valley Voice, recorded no campaign contribution income or expenses.
