CHILLIWACK – Chilliwack residents will have to find a different rec centre in the city if they’re looking to cool off, swim lanes or get the kids out of the house during the month of August.

Not long after it was closed for over a week in July due to an unexpected incident and the subsequent failure of one of its boiler components, the operator of the Cheam Leisure Centre in Chilliwack says its aquatic centre will be closed for basically the rest of August.

YMCA BC announced earlier this week that the Cheam Leisure aquatic area will be closed for scheduled maintenance from Monday, August 3 until Sunday, August 30.

“Thank you for your patience as we complete this important work. We look forward to welcoming everyone back soon,” YMCA BC said.

The closure comes as glass was found at the bottom of the pool following an “unexpected” incident on Monday night, July 13.

The YMCA says staff made an initial effort to remove the glass, but more pieces were discovered during a follow-up inspection the next morning on Tuesday, July 14.

Following an assessment by YMCA facilities personnel, staff determined that the pool had to be drained, cleaned, refilled, and inspected to ensure it was safe to reopen to the community.

“While this work was being completed, we encountered a critical failure in one of the boiler components, which is responsible for maintaining a safe pool temperature. Therefore, the reopening date for the pool is still being determined,” the YMCA said.

Rec centre staff apologized for the temporary closure.

“Once again, we wish to sincerely apologize for this inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding as we work to ensure our pool is safe before reopening,” the YMCA said.

The Cheam Leisure pool wound up reopening on Friday, July 24.
