ABBOTSFORD — Despite numerous campaigns aimed at eliminating impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel, Abbotsford police say officers pulled hundreds off of the roads in 2022.

In a social media post this weekend, AbbyPD says 881 impaired drivers were caught driving by its officers last year. That’s an average of more than 73 drivers every month.

Even more distressing is the fact the number of impaired driving cases in Abbotsford rose by 103 last year or 12 per cent.

AbbyPD say recently an impaired driver was removed from city streets with her two-year-old child in the vehicle with her.

According to ICBC, impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of car crash fatalities in British Columbia. On average, 64 people die in crashes involving impaired driving in B.C. annually and nearly one out of every four fatalities involving automobile crashes are connected to an impaired driver.

ICBC says 69 per cent of all impaired drivers involved in crashes are male. And 54 per cent of impaired driving crashes occur on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Authorities are reminding drivers to consider their options before going out, including using a designated driver, setting up a rideshare or a taxi or using public transit.
