CULTUS LAKE – A spokesperson for the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP detachment has confirmed that first responders were called to Cultus Lake over the weekend after a near-drowning incident.

Corporal Carmen Kiener told Fraser Valley Today in an email that the incident happened Sunday night. A man who did not have strong swimming skills entered the water near Main Beach.

He was attended to by bystanders and regained consciousness before being taken to hospital.

Cpl. Kiener planned to include the incident in her weekly recap, at which time additional details will be shared with the public.

The Cultus Lake Community Facebook group said the person who required medical treatment was a young man who was successfully rescued.

“This is a cautionary tale for anyone visiting the Lake,” the community group wrote on Facebook. It encouraged people to supervise young children or weaker swimmers by staying within arm’s reach; eliminate distractions by putting away cell phones and avoiding reading while watching water; designate a water watcher when swimming with a group; and wear life jackets when on boats, paddleboards or jet skis.

The Cultus Lake Community Association also encourages people to learn CPR, use the buddy system, know natural water hazards, and take formal swimming lessons.

“Formal lessons can drastically reduce drowning risks for people of all ages,” Cultus Lake Community wrote.

Cultus Lake has sadly been the site of multiple drownings over the years.

Less than a year ago, a man drowned at Cultus Lake after he was reportedly under water for approximately 10 minutes.

In August 2023, the body of a 22-year-old Surrey man was recovered after he drowned.
